About TUTV

Temple University Television (TUTV) is Temple's digital cable station, broadcasting in Philadelphia on Comcast channel 50 and Verizon FIOS channel 45. TUTV features a variety of programming from the Klein College of Media and Communication, other Temple schools, and community partners.

The station airs major university events like the Lew Klein Alumni in the Media Awards, along with original and student shows such as Temple Update, OwlSports Update, We Need To Talk, and Queer Temple. It also presents documentaries, lectures, and academic programs and collaborates with the Center for the Arts, the Fox School of Business, Medicine, and Athletics.

Live in Paris

I worked with Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication to design and produce various graphic products for their live broadcasting of the Paris 2024 Olympics. TUTV, a CNN affiliate, partnered with NBC10 in July of 2024 to cover life in Paris, France, during the Olympic Games.

I worked under Paul Guck, General Manager of TUTV and Associate Professor of Practice at the Klein School of Media and Communication, to create a 30-second title sequence, news graphics, and an original Logo for TUTV's broadcasting station.

The Title Sequence

When creating the title sequence, there were a few points I had to hit and various obstacles to overcome for it to succeed. With such a broad subject, choosing what parts of Paris to include in the short 30 seconds I had to animate was challenging. I began my research by watching videos and reading news articles about the beautiful city of Paris. From there, I drafted a few storyboards following the overarching guidelines of what life was like in Paris during the Olympic Games. After pitching the concept, I illustrated each scene, capturing five locations: the TUTV studio, the Eiffel Tower, a beautiful French cafe, the Arch de Triomphe, and the Louver.

The Crew

The animation follows TUTV's reporters as they explore Paris, capturing the excitement of being in the city during the Olympic Games. With a quick turnaround time, I had to work smarter, not harder, so I took advantage of Temple's partnership with Adobe to access licensed Adobe Stock graphics. This allowed me to create personalized cartoon versions of each anchor and reporter featured in the broadcast. Using Adobe's extensive library of premade cartoon graphics, I enjoyed mixing and matching outfits and facial features to bring each person to life. The Logo

When designing the logo, I wanted to capture the essence of "traveling," so I used suitcase badges as the central theme. I drew inspiration from France, using the colors of the French flag—blue, white, and red—to give the design a distinct and recognizable identity. The Eiffel Tower, an iconic symbol of Paris, serves as the focal point of the logo, emphasizing the connection to the location. To seamlessly blend the project's purpose with its visual identity, I carefully integrated the "TUTV" logo into the badge, ensuring it complemented the overall design while standing out as a critical element. Additionally, I designed a secondary logo specifically for the animation by separating the TUTV logo into the suitcase tag. This allowed for a dynamic and versatile visual that enhanced the traveling theme while maintaining a solid connection to Temple University.

In addition to crafting an adaptable logo and animated title sequence, I developed a cohesive series of templates for TUTV's live broadcast from Paris. These templates were meticulously designed to unify and reinforce the suitcase travel badge concept, ensuring a seamless visual experience throughout the broadcast. To maintain brand consistency, I incorporated the same color palette as the logo and integrated a stitched border that mirrored the badges on the suitcase. For added visual interest, I used illustrations from the animation to create the Paris skyline on select templates. Multiple versions of each template were created to provide the team with the flexibility needed for any last-minute adjustments. This design approach ensured that every aspect of the templates echoed the travel theme, resulting in a strong, unified brand identity.

Behind the Scenes

I had the incredible opportunity to see all my designs come together in the studio during the live broadcast preparation. The crew and I worked closely during the rehearsal to ensure every visual element—from the templates to the animated sequences—ran smoothly. It was a rewarding experience to witness firsthand how the designs, which I had spent so much time developing, seamlessly integrated into the production. Being part of this process was exciting and eye-opening, as I gained valuable insights into how a broadcast operates behind the scenes. I learned so much from seeing how each department collaborates to make the final product a success, and I'm incredibly proud of the work we produced. Watching everything fall into place was a testament to our effort, and I'm grateful to have been a part of such a dynamic team.
